NEW DELHI: Buying fancy numbers for cars and motorcycles has become a new craze for vehicle owners.

There are many Indians in the past who crazily bought fancy numbers for vehicles by paying a huge amount of money and spending the hard-earned money.

In a recent similar incident, a man from Chandigarh bought a fancy number worth Rupees 15.44 lakh for his newly purchased Honda Activa 6G.

The man identified as Brij Mohan, a 40-year-old Chandigarh-based businessman placed a bid of Rupees 15.44 lakh for a number in front of the the auctioneers of Chandigarh RTO at an auction for fancy numbers.

He placed the bid for a registration number which is 'CH-01-CJ-0001' and put on his new two-wheeler that was bought at a showroom price of Rupees 71,000.

Mohan said that currently he will be using this costly fancy number for his Honda Activa but also informed that later in the future he will also use it for a car that he will soon buy.

After purchasing the car, Mohan said that he will transfer the registration number for the car by making the payment for a nominal fee.

The number purchased by the Chandigarh businessman was a part of an auction organized by the Chandigarh Registration & Licensing Authority. The auction was conducted in the city from Thursday 14 April to Saturday 16 April.

Following the auction event, at least 378 fancy numbers went under the hammer and an amount of Rupees 1.5 crore was spent on purchasing these numbers by the participants.

This move by Mohan to buy a fancy number at such a huge cost appeared to be shocking for many but this is not the first time that number '0001' is in demand in the city.

Earlier in 2012, the same number was purchased at a cost of Rupees 26.05 lakh for a Mercedes Benz S-Class, the most expensive car worldwide.
